Mechanical keyboards have seen a recent resurgence on the gaming scene, but it is not necessarily new technology. In this course, you can learn why they are superior to traditional keyboards and how each switch type can improve your computing experience.

Traditional membrane (rubber dome) keyboards require you to press the button all the way down (bottom out) in order to activate, which can lead to finger fatigue, long-term discomfort, and lowered responsiveness.

CM Storm Mechanical keyboards utilize Cherry MX physical switches to determine the activation of when a key is pressed and in most cases do not require you to bottom-out on your keystrokes. That means as soon as your key is pressed to the activation point (2mm or half-way), the corresponding action will occur.

Users who type on their keyboards for extended periods of time – whether for work, gaming, or leisure – will feel the difference. Mechanical switches are also built from a higher quality, making them more durable for long term use (up to 50 million key presses).

It’s important to know that a “gaming keyboard” is not necessarily a mechanical keyboard. Regardless of how many buttons or flashy lights equipped on the board, it will still lack the comfort, durability, and responsiveness of a mechanical equivalent.

The most well known mechanical keyboard switch has the recognizable “click” the moment the activation point is hit. Blues are viewed as the best typing switch due to the tactile bump that allows quick movement from key to key, very similar to a classic typewriter.

This switch was also popularized for gaming due to the satisfying click sound and tactile bump doubling as confirmation of in-game actions.

Activation point:
Where the response of the key press is registered. Also known as “actuation” point.

Ghosting occurs when an unintended signal/character is sent due to the maximum number of simultaneous key presses being reached. Anti-ghosting ensures that your key presses are sent without error. (See also: NKRO, Blocking)

Occurs when your system reaches the maximum number of inputs allowed at a given time and no other commands are able to be issued. Anti-ghosting measures help eliminate blocking and provide error-free gaming.

Pressing a key down until its bottom/stopping point.

NKRO (N-Key Roll Over):
Being able to press as many keys as possible at the same time. Some keyboards are limited to 6KRO or 12KRO.
